WLC HNC EXHIBITION 2021
Look, Don't Touch
Rachel Hetherington
Over the past year I have created a body of work surrounding themes of perception, reality, and feminism. My work showcased in this exhibition relates to a unique relationship I observed between women and windows - stuck behind, venturing beyond, or staring wistfully out of.
I received 5 unconditional art school offers for all 4 major Scottish art schools and I will be attending Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design this September.

Currently I am a student at West Lothian College with an accepted offer for Grays School of Art’s Communication Design course. For my last project I explored a theme of Americanized Capitalism that evolved throughout the work into a targeted zine aimed at the concept of Mcdonaldisation.
For the second project I looked into a more personal angle using my own experiences of neurodiversity and how that impacts life and my interactions.

I am interested in the way we as humans live life due to the society we have created around us. My work has explored the pathways we take in life and why we live the way we do. I began to dig deeper into social norms, expectations of women and how this impacts the way people live their lives.
I received offers from art schools in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee. I have made the decision to study in Dundee at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design and look forward to continuing my creative journey.

My HNC Art and Design Portfolio Production course 2020 – 2021 has allowed me to explore and use mixed media work and to explore diverse ways of working, such as using twisted paper to add texture and abstract dimension, as well as using traditional mixed media, printing methods and digital image manipulation. I have discovered through my project titles that I enjoy abstract and find this free flow, drawing, and sketching, very liberating and more expressive.
Images on my website give examples of mixed media works from my subjects from blocks 1 and 2 “Music” and the “Structure of Memories”, exploring my holidays on the West coast of Scotland.

Since starting HNC in September, I have been creating a body of both 2D and 3D work exploring the notion of belonging through various underlying themes such as imposter syndrome, anxiety, comfort/discomfort and majorly, home, which grew in importance as a theme due to the fact that I have moved thirteen times; this now forms my main body of work.
I received offers from Glasgow School of Art: Sculpture and Environmental Art and Gray’s School of Art: Contemporary Art Practice. I will be attending Glasgow School of Art in September to begin my studies in their Fine Art department.

Over the past year I have been looking at the sexualisation of women in the media and in life. Feminism and the way women are viewed, stereotyped and judged is something I feel strongly about and have confronted through my work. During my time at West Lothian College, I have experimented with video projection, virtual reality, installation and performance. I have used these techniques to develop my ideas and create contemporary works of art.
I have been offered places at Edinburgh College of Art, Grays School of Art, Glasgow School of Art and Highlands and Islands. I will be moving on to study Sculpture and Environmental Art at Glasgow School of Art.

Over this past year I have created works that relate to my themes of modern slavery and addiction. My work showcased in this exhibition has explored how my dads addiction affected me and how I navigated life through those difficult times.
I received 4 conditional art school offers for 3 major Scottish art schools and I have chosen to attend Glasgow School of Art Painting and Printmaking at a 2nd year position.

Since starting my HNC at West Lothian College I have been developing my art knowledge and skills to discover new possibilities. I have been creating pieces using found objects, sewing, felting, printmaking and 3D printing. I am particularly fascinated in investigating the relationships between all living creatures through a microscopic view along with cells. I value how art can highlight the relationship between all life forms and our surroundings.
I received four offers from art schools, of which I have chosen to accept a place in Three Dimensional Design at Grays School of Art, Aberdeen.

I'm currently a student at West Lothian College studying HNC Portfolio Production. Throughout the last year I've been exploring the themes of perception, my own personal struggles with mental health and childhood through the use of fairytale narratives and imagery.
I've worked with a variety of 2D, 3D and digital media. Including printmaking, drawing, augmented reality, projection and stop motion. Through the use of these techniques I've expanded upon my ideas and created contemporary artworks.
